Many people who go to the North tend to fly to the south and then go up there, I cant see why it wouldn't work the other way.

Travellers entering the Republic of Cyprus via the illegal / closed airports and ports (i.e. all the airports and ports in the occupied areas), may still face the consequences of the Laws of the Republic. Therefore, you are urged to travel via the recognised ports of entry, so as to avoid any possible problems (provided that a visa has been granted to you). The legal ports of entry into the Republic of Cyprus are the airports of Larnaca and Paphos and the ports of Larnaca, Limassol, Latsi and Paphos, which are situated in the area under the effective control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus. Any entry into the territory of the Republic of Cyprus via any other port or airport in the area of Cyprus in which the Government of the Republic does not exercise effective control (Turkish occupied area) is illegal.

This is correct but according to the UK FCO although the Government of the RoC can fine you for illegal entry the current policy is not to do so!

Strange. As we sailed our Yacht into the TRNC. Stayed there two years. We traveled freely between North and South. By road via Nicosia.

You can fly in and out of Ercan with no problem at all. We have done it, as have friends.

Firstly, I wasn't responding to your reply I was responding to Carrot's! Secondly, your reply is materially incorrect it is still illegal! It is just that RoC choose not to enforce it at this point in time!

No, they don't because it is illegal as there is no such country - it is only the Republic of Cyprus that has sovereignty and part of which is under illegal turkish occupation.

If individuals choose to break the laws, time and forces will catch up with them.

We can argue semantics all day and night.
Bottom line, for the OP, is you can cross over either way regardless of where you came into the Island.

We don't need to argue semantics because basically you are wrong!

As regards the OP, the "bottom line" is they can cross over but at their own risk! If the RoC have a change of policy whilst the OP is on this side then they could be fined! The OP needs to be aware of this when deciding on whether to travel this way!

Spreading lies like this on the Internet is considered the worst form of propaganda (irresponsible and criminal if it incites wrongdoings). I hope those policing such activity check you out.

The opening poster asked a very simple question. All he has to do is present his EU passport at the checkpoint when he wants to cross from the north to the south. He will get his answer.

The answer, by the way, is yes. Yes, he can travel freely.

Of course you got a 'conflicting answer' - you're asking about a place under military occupation. It's not easy for someone to recommend that you do something illegal (unless they are criminals themselves - and there's a few around.)

Which office? In the occupied "north" or the "south"?
The "north" authorities are not bothered if you cross over to the "south".
BTW Amanda, I strongly object to you calling me a liar about this issue.
The fact is that in practice there is no problem for EU passport holders to cross in either direction.
I think that is all the OP wanted to know!
I suspect there are some local "politics" that crept into this thread.

Have done this myself. Had no problem as others have said.
Just take your EU passport to show at the border.
Question is how will we be affected once the 'Brexit' procedure starts?

Well assuming you are right and I am wrong (where is it written?) - makes no odds.
EU Citizens in practice can cross over in both directions whenever they wish to, 24/7.

You really don't get it do you?

Nobody has said that it's not possible to cross over what we are pointing out is the incorrect statement you made in post 4! Carrot has already supplied a link in his post 5 which confirms this & if you want further proof then have a look at this link to the UK Gov site https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/cyprus/safety-and-security, check out the last paragraph under the section headed Local Travel, it's still effective as of today!

Exactly, I have come to the South many times in the past 4-5 years, in my car, a friend's car, a hire car and as a pedestrian and either had my white piece of paper stamped with an exit visa or more recently it was just entered on the computer at the Turkish sector and on each occasion held up my EU Passport at the Cyprus sector (the staff didn't even bother checking it) and was waved through. The important factor is to make sure your information has been entered on the computer system in the TRNC each time you enter and when you leave because if you return at a later date you could be fined.

Do you mean this bit?

"British and other foreign nationals who have entered Cyprus through the north are considered by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus to have entered Cyprus through an illegal port of entry."

Or this bit?

"The ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ is not recognised by the British government."

Seems that some people cannot recognise the truth.

And once we have Brexit, it's going to get nasty for those people entering illegally this EU territory under illegal occupation by another foreign country. :!:
